Aaou Hieroglyph Dictionary App Reviews

It is great! Im learning a lot with it. But I think that it could have more expressions, though it is really great.

I liked this app on iPhone very much during a visit in Cairo museum. Lot of fun even for a non-Egyptologist. On iPhone there are some strange details: - long names are not visible with all characters. - some of the most common names are missing despite 20.000+ entries One detail I really dont like: the price for the iPad app. Hey, I aleeady bought one app. Why should I pay another 15€ for the iPad version without having real advantages in vocabulary????

Like everything about the app except that it can be difficult to find a common, simple word. It took me a minute or two to find the word "day," 3 minutes to find the word "type, kind, fashion" because it lists every entry including the word. Would be cool of it would list the words according to relevance to the word given ( ie, if youre looking for "day" it will give you entries that only have the word "day" in it first).

Best money I have ever spent on an app. So far I am extremely pleased with this app and the only thing I can say negatively about it is that it types a little slow. Otherwise this is amazing! I use it all the time and can find words easily. I love this app :)

It is a relatively useful tool. Certainly it has all the limitasions of a dictionary without sentences, examples and other lexical details, that in this field are by far the most relevant. But if you cant have at hand Wörterbuch (in print or pdf), its versatility may solve you some doubts. I just wonder if it would be possible to have an upgrade to an iPad version for those who purchased the iPhone program, when the pad one was not yet developed (if any difference exists beside graphic quality): I would find pointless spending twice for the same thing. Keep up the updates! ;-)

This app doesnt solve all the problems of reading Egyptian, but it is invaluable in solving what for me is the hardest part - vocabulary.

This is really the only game in town and were lucky its so good. The interface can be a little clunky at times, but its still much easier than a analogue dictionary. Easily worth the price and a huge help to my studies

Im not an Egyptologist so cant speak from that perspective, but I am studying Egyptian with an online group and as a student of Egyptian find this application enormously helpful. Aaous interface is elegant and well thought out. It makes good use of picker wheels to select hieroglyps or transliterations to search for words. The entries for each word are beautifully laid out, with stunning glyphs for the hieroglyphs, unobtrusive Gardiner sign list encodings of the signs, the transliteration of the signs, and clear English equivalents. The dictionary seems quite comprehensive and often contains alternative spellings (and the author promises to add to the vocabulary). The one nit is that when using the picker wheel in the transliteration search, Aaou performs an incremental search and manipulating the wheels gets a little finicky. But thats a small issue given the power of this application. Update: I reviewed version 1.1.3 just before 1.1.5 was releaeased. The finickiness of the picker wheels in transliteration mode was fixed in the new version. It works very smoothly now. So Ive upgraded my rating to 5 stars.

Version 1.3.2 would not install at all on my iPhone iTouch. Apparently Mess. Dumont doesnt want to be contacted either since he didnt provide any sort of e-mail address for support. Avoid.

Very good application! Very easy to use, very consistent(no freeze ups), and creators do an excellent job of adding words!

very well done, complete, and easy to use. I wish there could be an iPad version to display those beautiful hieroglyphs even better! Right now, im using this iphone version on my iPad. its a very useful app for people learning middle Egyptian.

Works error-free. Great tool and pocket reference! Must have item for Egyptology enthusiasts and students of ancient hieroglyph writings! I cannot describe how pleased I am with this app! Never any lag, issue, or error. Always information found properly & quickly. Love seeing the hieroglyph names ( kings & gods) alongside their variations used over the eras. ( would love to find info on these variations- when used commonly, era period, or sone info to help users determine which is most suited from a search result page?. App is updated regularly and new terms and words added consistently-improving on what I consider my most valuable iPhone tool. As a great fanatic of Ancient Egypt, this app is most highly recommended of all apps to date in the AppStore. The price is nothing in comparison to this app quality and use for any fan, student, or lovers of history! Great work & kudos to this developer!!!

Hard to use! Not worth the money!!!

I would give this app five stars if only you could enlarge the images since I have this on my iPhone the images are too small. This app comes in handy all the time when I need a translation or a clue as to what is being said on stelae or the like. Translations of whole sentences is something that is needed as well, although Im still learning how to use this app so it might have this feature already. This is great for testing yourself on where the shapes are listed also. I must say though that out of over a hundred apps this one is my favorite, thank you to all the developers.

Please make Aaou LIKE the APP called speak it:to text with real female and male voiceses, only with a hieroglyphic keyboard included and the other features that Aaou has maybe a buit in tuteror also. I WIIL PAY GOOD MONEY FAR THAT APP!!! besides speak it to text only cost a $1.00 but i love it. Please make for old and newer ipod as well until I buy a new ipod or ipad thankyou. ALSO IF YOU INCLUDE A SKETCHING PAD( MODE) TO DRAW HIEROLYPHIC WITH BESIDES A KEYBOARD TO TYPE THEM, IT IS APART OF LEARNING HIEROGLYPHICS THAT WOULD BE AWSOM! THIS CAN BE ONE OF YOUR EXSPENSIVE APPS BUT OK, NO PROBLEM!!!!. We can always buy more voices when we want to upgrade. IS THIS APP GOING TO BE ON ITUNES SOON ?

This is the best. I use it all the time for my translations. Its so great to be able to pull out my iPhone and find things quickly and easily. I am very grateful to the developers!

Cant tell you how many times this has come in so handy. Its like having Faulkner in your pocket all the time, with fonts you can read (sorry Faulkner, I have a tough time with your handwriting).

So worth it!
